LTS-Exercise-Lymphedema-1

Exercise is one of the most effective tools for managing lymphedema because the lymphatic system relies on muscle movement to circulate fluid. Unlike the heart, the lymph system has no central pump — it depends on muscle contractions to move lymph upward and prevent it from pooling. Gentle, controlled movement helps reduce swelling, decrease heaviness and tightness, and keep fluid from building up. When done correctly and progressively, exercise supports healthy drainage rather than worsening symptoms.

Beyond reducing swelling, regular exercise helps maintain flexibility, prevent tissue hardening (fibrosis), improve circulation, and lower infection risk. Activities such as walking, light strength training, swimming, stretching, and deep breathing can all play an important role in managing lymphedema — especially when combined with proper compression and guidance from our trained professionals. Our team will work closely with you to create a personalized exercise plan designed to support long-term control, improve function, and help you take an active role in your overall health and well-being.
